Jim and Pamela’s dog

Sage-Brush

The books call him Sage. The paper that names him says Sage-Brush. Sage-Brush. Shepherd-Labrador mix. Lost twice: a two-month pup in August 1969, and again in September 1970.

August 1969

The Themis shop number, 652-5916, is on a lost-dog ad. Gold shepherd mix puppy, two months old, Santa Monica / La Cienega, $100. 25–31 August 1969. Seven days. The name is not in these ads. The number is.

“$100 REW. Gold shep. mix. pup. 2 mos. Lost vic. Santa Monica/La Cienega. Ph. 652-5916 or 454-9362.” Ten days after the last mirror ad. Same boutique number.

The Teske date

The ads are dated. Late August 1969: gold shepherd mix, two months old. Born around June. The Themis number is on them. Sage-Brush.

Teske photographed Jim and Pamela at Bronson Caves on 31 March 1969. That sitting is in his archive. Captions online put Sage in those pictures. A two-month pup in August cannot be in a frame from March. Either the dog in that picture is not Sage-Brush, or the cave set is dated wrong. In 1970 he photographed Jim and the band. That is not a second cave sitting with Pamela.

The paper does not move.

September 1970

21 and 22 September 1970. Golden Lab, Old Yeller type, red flea collar, $200, lost at Santa Monica and La Cienega. Call 654-5815.

21 September 1970 · Sage-Brush

“$200 REWARD. Golden Lab. Old Yeller type. Red flea collar. Los vic. Santa Monica & La Cienega Bl. Ans. to the name of Sage-Brush. Call 654-5815.” The first insertion that prints a name. The books say Sage. Sage-Brush was not known before I found this ad. The corner, the collar and the reward are the same dog as the ads that follow.

22 September 1970 · Sage-Brush

Next day. Same ad. “Ans. to the name of Sage-Brush. Call 654-5815.” The name is in the paper twice.

26–29 September the name is gone. Yellow Labrador, red flea collar, same corner, same $200. The second number is OL.4-5815, which is 654-5815. The shop line 652-5916 is on those four. Same dog. A year on from the gold shepherd-mix pup.

26 September 1970 · Sage-Brush

“$200 REWARD For the return of yellow Labrador male. Red flea collar. Lost in vicinity of Santa Monica & La Cienega. 652-5916, OL.4-5815.” Does not print the name. Same reward, same collar, same corner as the 21st. OL.4-5815 is 654-5815, the number on the ad that says Sage-Brush. This one adds the shop line, 652-5916.
